What Causes Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer is caused by the body’s cells dividing in a way that is not normal.

This can be caused by:

  • Smoking
  • Alcohol
  • Ultraviolet light and Sun damage
  • Human Papilloma Virus. ( A virus similar to the virus that caused cold sores)

How Do You Avoid Getting Oral Cancer?

It is important that you avoid the things that cause oral cancer as much as possible.

It is also very important that you visit us regularly for check ups. At every check up we will screen you for oral cancer by examining your mouth and asking you about your exposure to the things that cause oral cancer. Even if you don’t have any teeth, we would like to see you at least once a year to screen you for oral cancer. Finally, it is important that you tell us about any changes, lump or bumps you have noticed in your mouth recently.
